The fourth edition of the Khelo India University Games 2023 Ashtalakshmi is set to formally begin on February 19 with a grand opening ceremony at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex, Guwahati. Close to 4,500 athletes representing 200 universities have converged on the Northeast for what is the most expansive edition of the Games to date, spanning 20 sports disciplines across 18 venues in Guwahati and six other cities in the region.
Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Singh Thakur and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will attend the ceremony in person, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the athletes through a video message. The event, open to the public free of charge, is designed around themes of unity, diversity, and sportsmanship - values central to the Khelo India mission since its launch in 2016. The ceremony will also showcase Assam's rich indigenous arts and culture, offering a vivid cultural backdrop to the sporting occasion. For those who follow a wide range of competitive sports globally - whether it is football, kabaddi, or even a netball bet - the scale and ambition of this multi-sport gathering reflects India's growing investment in university-level athletic development.
Papon Set to Light Up the Stage in Guwahati
Adding genuine star power to proceedings, Assam's internationally recognised singer Papon will perform at the opening ceremony. Known for his distinctive voice that blends folk traditions with contemporary sounds, Papon's inclusion has been welcomed warmly by local officials. Assam's Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa noted that the artist's presence would significantly elevate the event's appeal, both for the thousands of young athletes in attendance and for the wider audience following the Games.
Competition Already Under Way as Kabaddi Opens the Games
While the formal ceremony arrives on February 19, competition at KIUG 2023 actually got under way on February 16 with kabaddi at the Sarusajai Stadium. Eight teams, split into two pools in both the men's and women's sections, are already chasing glory. Bhagat Pool Singh Mahila University opened their women's campaign with a four-point victory over GKU in Pool A, while Kurukshetra University and Lalit Narayan Mithila University played out a tightly contested draw in the same group. In the men's draw, Mangalore University defeated Shri JJT University by 11 points and Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak edged the University of Kota by a single point in Pool A. Pool B produced an equally tight contest, with Vels Institute of Technology and Advanced Studies claiming a one-point win over Guru Kashi Punjab University.
Northeast in Focus: Local Representation and the Bigger Picture
Hosting the Games in the Northeast carries particular significance. Guwahati alone will stage 16 of the 20 disciplines on offer, including athletics, rugby, basketball, volleyball, swimming, badminton, hockey, fencing, kabaddi, women's football, tennis, mallakhamb, judo, and table tennis. Within the regional contingent, Manipur University leads with 19 athletes - the highest representation from any Northeastern institution - while Dibrugarh University fields the largest squad from Assam with six competitors. The Khelo India University Games, as a pillar of the broader Khelo India initiative, is designed precisely to surface talent from underrepresented regions, and the Northeast's prominent role in this edition underlines the government's intent to broaden the country's sporting geography well beyond traditional centres.
