Egg thrown at Wembanyama draws condemnation as Knicks fan violence escalates
Victor Wembanyama was struck by an egg thrown by what appeared to be New York Knicks fans as the San Antonio Spurs departed for their hotel following Game 4 of the NBA Finals on June 10, 2026. Social media footage showed at least one projectile thrown toward the Spurs center as security personnel escorted him into a New York City hotel. ESPN host Mike Greenberg, a New York native, described those responsible as "a disgrace."
"If you're throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama and beating up people... threatening... or doing anything to people who are wearing Spurs jerseys, just know that you are a disgrace. You're not disgracing this city, you're disgracing yourself and everyone who knows you," Greenberg said on the June 10 edition of "Get Up." The incident was not isolated. Following San Antonio's 115-111 victory in Game 3, multiple brawls broke out near a watch party at Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan. The New York Police Department reported 21 arrests - 13 for disorderly conduct, with the remainder facing charges including assaulting officers, criminal possession of weapons, and menacing. Separately, social media footage from around that same period appeared to show Knicks fans physically confronting Spurs supporters and tearing jerseys from their backs.
Wembanyama, the NBA's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, addressed the fan behavior before the egg incident occurred. "My thoughts of course [are] that we can't forget it's a game," he said. "We're just playing a game out there. I am all for passion, but [with] the respect of each other. It's unacceptable." The disorder adds a troubling backdrop to a Finals series that has already produced historic basketball. The Knicks completed a 29-point comeback in Game 4 - the largest in NBA Finals history, according to the draft - to take a 3-1 series lead. New York is competing in its first NBA Finals since 1999, when the franchise lost the championship to the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks have not won an NBA title since 1973.
The series shifts to San Antonio for Game 5 on Saturday, June 13, with the Spurs facing elimination. If necessary, Game 6 returns to New York on Tuesday, June 17.
